August Athlete of the Month – Edwin Hughes

Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this journey ‘to be better’ as a team – What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.

Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.

Challenges, successes and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, can simply not be underestimated!

Each month we recognise one of our athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in and out of the Athletic Zone.

Congratulations to Athletic Zone’s August Athlete of the Month – Edwin Hughes!

Eddie has only been a member of AZ for a short time, but he made himself recognised straight away. He has been CrossFitting for 4-5 years and has made huge improvements in that time, achieving ring muscle ups and successfully snatching 60kg in workouts which has been one of his goals. He thrives on being the best he can in and outside of the gym, he knows what it takes to run a full time successful business, train everyday and be there for his family.

Eddie doesn’t let excuses get in the way of his health and fitness. Since becoming a part of the AZ community he has stood out in his performance and attendance. He brings great value and a positive vibe to our box and we can’t wait to see where this journey continues to take him in the future.

He’s an inspiration to others and he will let you know when he’s put his heart and soul into his workouts by letting out his signature ‘scream’.

A few moments with Edwin:

When did you start doing Cross-fit?                                    

8 years ago, around 2009 up in the Sunshine Coast.

Most loved WOD/Movement?

This is a hard one to nail down, but I’d probably have to say Thrusters are my movement and the fav WOD would be Fran…I even completed Tequila Fran at the final party for Crossfit lift, 7 mins something with a tequila shot between movements…needless to say it hurt. 

Least Favourite WOD/Movement?

Muscle Ups…I’d like to make them a strength though.

Favourite cheat meal?

Cheese Kranskies, washed down with a few beers followed by chocolate.

Proudest Moment?

One of my proudest moments in Crossfit was competing in the WODstock event down in the Gold Coast as a individual (which is unusual for me to compete alone) I managed to get third place.

What was your goal when joining Athletic Zone?

To find a box that is run well, a place where I can get a good workout with a great crew of people. I have found it and I’m loving it. What excites me the most about this place is the dedication of the team to the customers and community.

What is your 6 month goal?

I’m not really good with goal setting when it comes to my fitness, but I would like to be proficient in the Muscle Up.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

Hell yeah, my kids do Crossfit. I am able to keep up with them and that’s important to me. 

What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier?

Join a Crossfit box and don’t line up at Macca’s. It’s too easy these days to get caught up with the junk food trends and fast food frenzies. Eat well, train hard and have fun.
