Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this journey ‘to be better’ as a team – What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.
Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.
Challenges, successes and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, can simply not be underestimated!
Each month we recognise one of our athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in and out of the Athletic Zone.
Congratulation to Athletic Zone’s January Athlete of the Month – Alex Kerz!
Alex has been apart of our community for just over a year and you can see she is hooked, she keeps coming back for more! Her consistency and dedication to her training doesn’t go unnoticed. Personally, in the time I’ve known Alex I’ve watched her grow from someone who’d question her ability to now moving from strength to strength and taking charge of her workouts.
I like to call her the ‘silent assassin’ she will always walk in to the gym motivated ready to go, acknowledge everyone as she walks past, always has a plan for her workout, will never drop a ‘negatron bomb’ about a workout, she just gets the job done.
Only one year in her CrossFit journey and already achieving movements she’d thought weren’t possible, with the guidance of her coaches we all can’t wait to see what the next 12 months will bring for Alex!
Keep up the amazing work!

A few moments with Alex:
When did you start doing Cross-fit? I started in Oct 2016
Most loved WOD/Movement? All the squats (back, front, overhead), Cleans and Double-unders
Least Favourite WOD/Movement? Airdyne without a doubt!! (insert spew-face emoji here!)
Favourite cheat meal? A big bowl of creamy carbonara or pesto pasta. With garlic bread!
Proudest Moment? I’d have to say hitting PBs in all lifts of a French Powerlifting small group session with Teddy and Sarah a couple of months ago. To see how much I could improve with a bit of commitment and focus was really rewarding
What was your goal when joining Athletic Zone? My goal was really just to try something new and meet some new people. I had no idea what to expect , but now that I’ve started I have so many new goals!
What is your 6 month goal? Haha, ok where to start… strict pull-ups, toes to bar, free-standing handstands, improve my deadlift, snatch, the list goes on!
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym? Absolutely, not only from making new friends and new housemates, being part of the Crossfit and Function Well communities has totally opened my mind to fitness and wellness, its given me a desire to improve in all different aspects of my life
What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier? I would say just start small, make small changes that are sustainable and find types of exercise that you enjoy. Not everyone will like the same things so find what works for you.
If you were to create a WOD and name it after yourself, it would be:
“Over My Dead Body”
5 rounds for time:
10 dumbell snatch
8 Burpees over bar
