Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this journey ‘to be better’ as a team – What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.
Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.
Challenges, successes and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, can simply not be underestimated!
Each month we recognise one of our athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in and out of the Athletic Zone.
Congratulations to Athletic Zone’s July Athlete of the Month – Nisette Gorton!
Nisette is one of our long term athletes, her support over the last few years means a lot to me.
Nisette is motivating to be around, she does her best every session, is willing to try new things and is always willing to push herself harder than yesterday.
Like many Fit Mum’s, Nisette is busy, busy, busy. She is a great example that you can make time to stay fit and healthy even while juggling a hectic schedule and be an inspiration to your children.
Nisette quietly goes about her business in the box with a fierce determination. She is always up to challenging herself by competing in local comps, the Open and our internal Weightlifting Comps.
It has been pretty cool to witness Nisette’s progress since starting. I’m looking forward to seeing where Nisette gets to over the next few months with our Next Level Program.
Congratulations Nisette for being our July AOM.

A few moments with Nisette:
When did you start doing Cross-fit?
October 2015 officially, though I had been training upstairs at FW for a while before that.
Most loved WOD/Movement?
Tough choice between DT, Grace, and Isabel
Least Favourite WOD/Movement?
Pullups – I had them once….
Favourite cheat meal?
Pinot Noir paired with anything I haven’t had to cook myself
Competing at WODSTOCK down the Gold Coast after only 4 weeks of crossfit – what an epic day! I’ve done three comps now with AZ teams, and have another one planned in September. They’re a great way to challenge yourself, it’s always good to have something to train for, and heaps fun.
What was your goal when joining Athletic Zone?
To find a program that would keep me challenged and keep me coming back
What is your 6 month goal?
Stay consistent with my training, and mobility (yay for ROMWOD); stay injury free. And maybe start training for a “real” weightlifting comp (you know what they say about writing goals down and telling other people).
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
Definitely. The self-confidence I’ve gained, and the social connections have been amazing , but I also hope to inspire my kids to push themselves and realize that you only get out of life what you put in – plus I like being able to arm wrestle my teenage boys and win, and being a strong role model for my daughter is pretty important too.
What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier?
If you were to create a WOD and name it after yourself, it would be:
Partnered WOD, IGYG
Over the bar burpees
Start at 2 reps each movement, increase by 2 reps each round. 20 minute time cap.
