June Athlete of the Month – Richard Adams

Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this journey ‘to be better’ as a team – What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.

Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.

Challenges, successes and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, can simply not be underestimated!

Each month we recognise one of our athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in and out of the Athletic Zone.

Congratulations to Athletic Zone’s June Athlete of the Month – Richard Adams!

Big Rich started in the Athletic Zone with a pre-existing, long-term back injury. He started with a goal – he wanted to be able to train and move pain free, then build to a level where he could complete all the movements safely and without pain too.

We’re happy to say Rich has smashed this goal and more! He has reached a level where he is Olympic lifting and completing high intensity workouts safely and pain free. He is very in tune with his body and makes intelligent training decisions. He recognises his slight niggles and modifies his workouts where there is a potential risk of injury.

Getting to this point hasn’t come easily for Rich. He has been very patient and meticulous with his accessory exercises and mobility for a long period of time, and continues to be first in the box most mornings doing his extras before class .

It’s hard to believe Rich is 40- looking at that physique you definitely wouldn’t guess it! As a coach, it’s rewarding to watch Rich drastically improve his fitness, physique, mobility and strength – all of which he thought may have been unachievable due to his injuries. I think it would be pretty fair to say he’s hit the best shape of his life!

With any serious injury, it’s easy to adopt a negative mindset – something along the lines of “it’s all too hard, I can’t train because I’m injured”. Rich is a prime example of how this is not always the case! With the right advice and good quality coaching, “movement really is medicine”.

His progress over the last year or so has been phenomenal and we can’t wait to see it continue.

Beyond all that, Rich brings a positive, encouraging comradery to every class.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

6th January 2017.

Most loved WOD/Movement?

Anything involving some Olympic lifting, cleans or snatch.

Least Favourite WOD/Movement?

Anything involving the Airodyne (it hurts like nothing else).

Favourite cheat meal?

Getta burger with double patty no sauce!

Proudest Moment?

Getting my first bar and ring Muscle ups!

What was your goal when joining Athletic Zone?

To take part in CrossFit classes and master the big movements such as; ring muscle ups, bar muscle ups, double unders and handstands.

What is your 6 month goal?

30 second handstand hold.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

Yes definitely I feel more confident, healthier and I have more energy than I ever have before.

What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier?

CONSISTENCY in nutrition, movement, training and increased knowledge.

If you were to create a WOD and name it after yourself, it would be:

THE GRIZZLY (as in Grizzly Adams)

8 x squat cleans (60kgs and 40kgs)

8x pull ups
