Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this journey ‘to be better’ as a team – What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.
Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure, it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.
Challenges, successes and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, can simply not be underestimated!
Each month we recognise one of our athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in and out of the Athletic Zone.
Congratulations to our August Athlete of the Month – Josh Weller!
It’s hard to believe how far Josh has come in only 3 months.
Josh was already strong and fit. His limiting factor was mobility, which compromised his positions particularly with his weightlifting. To his credit, he has been meticulous with his mobility protocols since starting here in the AZ. This hard work has paid off, and as result he is now able to execute oly movements with solid form, which has manifested as greater power output and efficiency during WODs.
In today’s desk bound world, poor mobility is common for most athletes who walk through our doors. Despite our best efforts to stress the importance of mobility and how improving it will have the greatest impact on the other 9 physical skills that make up fitness, not all athletes take the necessary time to work on it. We can understand why! Let’s face it, its not as exciting as a met con class or getting a PR back squat, but the rewards are definitely worth it. Josh is a prime example of this and has demonstrated that gaining flexibility is primarily about discipline.
It requires no special skills or specialized knowledge or any real pain, all that is required is the commitment to stretch often.
On top of all this Josh is just an all round great bloke to have as part of our community. Josh is super coachable, and brings a dedicated attitude to every session. These are just a couple of the reasons Josh’s results have come such a long way in a short period of time. We can’t wait to see what you can achieve 6 months from now!
A few minutes with our Athlete of the Month…
When did you start doing CrossFit?
May 2016. I had been through the cycle of footy & strength training & it seemed like the right time for a new challenge.
Most Loved WOD/Movement?
Having a footy background, running comes pretty easily. But i am starting to enjoy the olympic lifting movements too.
Least Favourite WOD/Movement?
The airdyne (torture bike). My anaerobic capacity needs a lot of improvement.
Favourite Cheat Meal?
Sushi or Grilld … & stone & wood beer, thats a meal right?
Apart from purchasing lifting shoes, completing strict muscle ups.
What was your goal when joining the Athletic Zone?
Finding new challenges … & i have certainly found that. Also, to be as good as Vince Williams.
What is your 6month goal?
Body weight snatch. I have been a bit restricted with my mobility, but I am making small improvements.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?
Yes. Some things take time & patience.
What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier?
Make small, gradual changes to your diet and find a balance that suits you, everyone is different. You can’t out-train a bad diet.
If you were to create a WOD and name it after yourself, it would be:
Can’t think of anything original just yet … maybe something to do with kicking a footy??
