Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this journey ‘to be better’ as a team. What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.
Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure – it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.
Challenges, successes, and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, simply cannot be underestimated!
Each month we recognise one of our outstanding athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in, and out, of the Athletic Zone.
Congratulations to Athletic Zone’s February Athlete of the Month – Kelly Coonan!
Kelly embodies what it is to be well rounded in all aspects of CrossFit. He lifts well, is proficient in gymnastics, can cardio, and loves to hurt! One of the best parts being (for us coaches) that he is very coachable and always looking to improve. Apart from the physical skills, Kelly is very supportive of his fellow classmates, always having the chance to cheer them on because he usually finishes before most. On weekends, you can often find Kelly telling Isaac what to do during their 3 hour training sessions. This is just another testament to his loving nature and addiction to CrossFit. Your smiling face and positivity are great contributions to AZ, and we are lucky to have you!
P.S. Kelly loves competitions so be sure to ask him if you ever need an awesome team member!

A few moments with Kelly:
When did you start doing CrossFit?
2015 – I was very unhealthy, overweight and needed to change my life.
Most loved WOD/Movement?
I do love Thrusters. But really, anything that is bodyweight.
Actually, makes sense why I love Fran.
Least Favourite WOD/Movement?
Favourite cheat meal?
Icecream / Chocolate / Pizza – all the good things!
I don’t think there is a single one – knowing I have been able to help better someone is enough for me.
What was your goal when joining Athletic Zone?
Immerse myself in the community so that I enjoyed my gym sessions each week. It wasn’t hard in a place like AZ though.
If you were to create a WOD and name it after yourself, it would be:
15 Pistols (alternating)
9 Bar Muscle Ups
w/ 200m run at end of each round
What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier?
Get your mindset sorted first, the decisions of pushing yourself in a workout and what food goes in your mouth makes so much more sense
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
Being apart of community that strives to be better than you were the day before has only allowed me to know I can always aim for something more. It has allowed me to set goals, and actions on how to get it.
What is your 6 month goal?
Just set a plan in place to get a stronger core, so that I can’t start increasing my lifts.
