November Athletes of the Month – Dan & Jan Williams

Here in the Athletic Zone we’re all on this  journey ‘to be better’ as a team – What it means to you ‘to be better’ will be different to the next person; and their level of compliance and commitment ‘to be better’ will also be different to yours.

Where ever you are at, one thing is for sure it is not easy. Is it worth it? You know the answer to that, of course it is. This quest to be better, to constantly challenge yourself and each other, is what keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, month after month. This is the CrossFit community. An incredibly supportive, motivating and fun environment that helps people achieve a level of fitness and health that can’t be replicated.

Challenges, successes and triumphs shared with the entire support of the AZ group every step of the way, can simply not be underestimated!

Each month we recognise one of our athletes. This athlete may or may not know how much they are inspiring those around them with their achievements in and out of the Athletic Zone.

Congratulations to our Athletic Zone November Athletes of the Month – Dan & Jan Williams!

This month we’ve got two athletes for our Athlete of the Month, we couldn’t give it to Jan and not Dan, so we gave Dan a sympathy inclusion….Sorry Dan haha! Of course I’m just kidding. For those who train with Dan in the morning, we know there is always some friendly banter going around. Dan is known for his brilliant one-liners, usually at my expense. In all seriousness, Jan and Dan are both absolute legends to have as part of our community and are well and truly worthy recipients of our Athlete of the Month Title for November. Dan and Jan have been long time Function Well members and were our original Masters athletes when we affiliated – adding the Athletic Zone to our offering a couple of years ago. In this time they have been super consistent with their Tuesday and Thursday CrossFit classes, training upstairs in the main gym, and in more recent times embracing and receiving the full benefits of our Yin and Yang philosophy with some regular Yoga. They are a testament to the saying that “age is just a number”. When you see them train it is hard to believe they have 5 children and are grandparents. I really admire Jan and Dan in and out of the gym. I often jokingly say to my wife Tash “when we grow up I want us be like Dan and Jan”. Seeing them training with their daughters in the gym who are all super fit as well, is something I think is really special. I can’t think of a better way to spend quality time with your children than ripping into a training session with them.

Congratulations Jan and Dan, from all the AZ coaches. I’m looking forward to seeing what your WOD is, I’m tipping The Ghost?

A few moments with Dan & Jan:

When did you start doing CrossFit? Almost two years ago.  Wow, how time flies when you are having fun!!!

Most loved WOD/Movement? Modified Ghost – call us crazy but it gives you a bit of everything!!!

Least Favourite WOD/Movement? Burps – but is there anyone that really does except JP I think!!!

Favourite cheat meal? Dan’s spicy ribs and apple, fennel and red onion slaw.

Proudest Moment? Anything to do with our kids (and finally getting an unassisted pull up and the odd double under)

What was your goal when joining Athletic Zone? To keep going and also to include another exercise component in our weekly line up.  Because AZ ticks a lot of boxes with strength, cardio, gymnastics and social interaction, I think it is a great place to improve your all round fitness while having fun and hopefully hitting some of the marks along the way.  It seems you can teach an old dog new tricks!

What is your 6 month goal? To continue on doing Function Well programs, CrossFit and Restoration Zone and learn some new tricks or at least master a few more. We are finding the yoga fantastic for stretching out the weary muscles!

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym? Yes, we sleep well, eat well and Dan has a bigger thirst for the occasional red on the weekend.

What is your number 1 tip for someone looking to get healthier? Be committed, be consistent and be kind to yourself!!!

If you were to create a WOD and name it after yourself, it would be: If a WOD were to be named after us it would have to contain: Eating, Drinking & Laughing.
