Weightlifting Club


Our weekly WLC program is for the beginner to experienced lifter looking to take their Weightlifting to the next level.

Each week our Expert Coaches take you through the fundamental movements, technique drills, accessory work and coaching specific to you to improve your Olympic Lifting.

Who Should Weightlift?  

Anyone wanting to perform better at whatever it is that they do, will benefit from weightlifting!

Here’s Why

The Olympic Lifts (the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch) are complex movements worth mastering for huge rewards. They provide a huge stimulus for the body, creating great strength, body composition and neurological benefits. There is no other form of training that elicits the benefits of these two movements, due to the complexity and explosiveness required.

With consistency you can expect rapid results in strength, speed, coordination, power and flexibility – the key skills required for improved athleticism. 

Most importantly learning new skills and mastering them is FUN! When you are having fun, especially in a group environment the more inclined you will be to keep practicing and improving.

Whilst the benefits are hugely rewarding, they are not movements that can be self learnt. Due to their complexity they require to be taught from a qualified Weight Lifting Coach, the athlete needs to be patient and willing to work on each piece of the movement with consistent exposure…This means practice, practice and more practice.

 Efficacy and efficiency is paramount!

Before learning the C&J and snatch a proficient strength base in the fundamental movements; squat, deadlift, power clean and split jerk are essential. Often the limiting factor for efficacy in these lifts is poor mobility, or faulty lifting mechanics needing some fine tuning.

For this reason prior to commencing we require you to complete a Movement and Mobility Assessment with one of our expert Weightlifting Coaches.

On completion of the assessment you will be provided with individual mobility drills relative to your areas of restriction and accessory strength/corrective exercises specific to you.

Comp Days

We regularly hold internal Weight Lifting Comp Days for our WLC members and AZ athletes.  Supporters are welcome and encouraged to attend.

All participants are encouraged to work towards one of our internal comp days (but of course no pressure), regardless if you snatch 100kg or 20kg on the day it’s about having  fun and experiencing the thrill of competition. Ultimately we’d love to work you up to a level where you can compete in AWF comps throughout the year.

How to Get Started

Step 1: In order to attend our Brisbane Weightlifting club classes you must have a full Athletic Zone membership. Athletes on access only memberships that would like to attend Weightlifting Club will be required to upgrade their membership, to the full access rate. 

We also strongly recommend that current members who are new to this style of training complete our Weightlifting Foundations Program, as this will provide you with technique fundamentals, movement and mobility assessments. This can be purchased here

If you are not a member of Athletic Zone and would like to get started, you will receive our Foundations Program as a part of your induction process upon signing up.

Step 2:  Once you have completed your intro program (optional for current members) you are free to enter into our weekly Weightlifting sessions on Monday’s and Wednesday’s at 5.00pm.

To ensure the right amount of attention is given to each athlete, we require you to register for the class the day before online. You can do this by visiting our WLC timetable.
